Brownwood

Lake Brownwood offers a serene atmosphere and great water recreation for your time away form home. Brownwood was founded in August of 1856. The town flourished as a farming and ranching community for several years. Then in 1886 the Santa FE Railroad moved into the area and increased the economy and population of Brownwood tremendously. In the 1920's there was and oil boom that brought 25 oil manufacturing plants to Brownwood. WWII brought even more changes to Brownwood. In 1940 the town was selected as a site for a large army training site called Camp Bowie. With the end of the war came the closing of Camp Bowie. The town suffered a great loss, however the citizens engaged in an industrial effort and created an industrial backbone upon which they continue to build today.
