Mount Vernon, Texas

Located in the Piney Woods region, the town of Mount Vernon, Texas is in Franklin county.

 

Located 100 miles east of Dallas on I-30, Mount Vernon is a city rich in historic sites. Nature tourism abounds, both within city limits in designated trails, and at nearby Lake Cypress Springs. Charming downtown plaza with antiques, dining, and shopping. Mount Vernon was the home of the tallest soldier in the Confederate Army: Col Henry Clay Thruston, 7 feet 7 and one half inches tall. His 1868 'dogtrot' style home has been carefully restored and is now known as the 'Bankhead Highway Visitors Center.
