Marfa, Texas
Located in the
Big Bend
region, the town of Marfa, Texas is in
El Paso
county.
At an altitude of 4,830 feet, Marfa lies on a semi-protected highland plain between three mountain ranges, and is known as the home of the Marfa Mystery Lights ( Marfa Lights ), an enigma that appears almost nightly. In Marfa, the traditional lifestyle of the Texas cowboy coexists with the growing art community that began with the arrival of world renowned artist Donald Judd in the mid-1970's and the creation of the Chinati Foundation. When visiting, be sure to take note of the newly restored Presidio County Courthouse. Marfa was the location in the 1950's for the filming of Giant, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean. Stop by the Marfa and Presidio County Museum and the Hotel Paisano to view some of the memorabilia.
