Forney, Texas

Forney is a quaint little town that is experiencing fast fabulous growth once again. In 1872, the town fathers moved the village of Brooklyn north to put it on the rail line. Because there was already a town named Brooklyn in Texas the post office made them choose a new name. They name it Forney in honor of John W. Forney who was a director of the Texas and Pacific Railroad. Because of the rail, prosperity came to Forney rapidly as they were a convenient stop and freight location for shippers from what is now Rockwall County and southern Kaufman County. Forney gained acclaim for their sweet prairie hay that was shipped worldwide. Commerce settled into the town and Forney experienced a comfortable economic level through the 50's. Forney was declared The Antique Capital of Texas in 1987 by the Texas Legislature because of our vast array of antiques available.
