Longview, Texas
Longview was city was founded April 7, 1870 by O.H. Methvin, a successful farmer who made a deal with the Southern Pacific Railroad to deed 100 acres of land for the price of one gold dollar with the stipulation that the railroad build a town on the land. This 100 acres became the site of the Longview, Texas. The city plat, laid out by the railroad established Central (now called Center) Street and Tyler Street intersection as the meeting point for East/West and North/South. The city received its name when railroad surveyors, standing on Mr. Methvin's front porch on top of Rock Hill remarked on the long view one had from that vantage point. The One Hundred Acres of Heritage commemorate Longview's beginning. Downtown Longview is the sight for several exciting events and festivals including: AlleyFest, Light-Up-Longview, Living History Christmas and Longview's popular Christmas Parade.
