El Paso, Texas
El Paso, Texas, Fourth largest city in Texas, El Paso, is steeped in more than 400 years of history and culture. El Paso is a unique blend of late twentieth century cosmopolitan living and Old West pioneer spirit. The city also shares a border with Mexico. Its beginnings date back to 1598, when Don Juan de Onate, one of the earliest Spanish conquistadors, prepared to enter what is now North America. He led his men through the mountains. He named this pass: El Paso del Norte or Pass of the North. Some 80 years later, the historic missions in Ysleta and Socorro, and later the presidio church in San Elizario, were established. These simple, austere monuments to an age-old religious tradition still stand today, just minutes from a modern urban community of just over 700,000.
