Found West of the Pecos, Fort Stockton is a thriving, growing community that welcomes the opportunity to meet your travel needs. Fort Stockton's beginnings date back to the 1850's when it was known as St. Gall. The US Army established a fort on the banks of the Comanche Creek in 1859 to protect settlers and travelers in the area. The fort was abandoned during the Civil War and then reestablished in 1867 and served until 1886. The post war site has been restored and is now a major attraction. This multicultural community boasts two museums: the Annie Riggs Memorial Museum, Wheels and a museum at Historic Fort Stockton. There is an 18 hole golf course, numerous improved parks, a National Register Historic District with 16 points of interest, a civic center, a coliseum, and a municipal airport. Our community has a growing economic base that includes oil and gas production, a winery, shrimp farming, pecan orchards, ranching and farming. Visitors will find a wide selection of motels, restaurants, and campgrounds as well as a Texas Friendly population of 8,524. Fort Stockton lies along the northern edge of the Chihuahuan Desert at an elevation of 3,000 feet. The desert setting and elevation contribute to cool nights, warm days, and spectacular sunsets. The average temperature in January is 46 degrees while August averages a temperature of 82. Annual rainfall is 14 inches with an average of 3 inches of snow a year. There are 127 days with temperatures above 90 degrees and the growing season is 224 days. Located on Interstate 10, just 240 miles east of El Paso and 325 miles west of San Antonio, Fort Stockton is a comfortable day drive, leaving time to tour our community and its attractions. In addition to the sites and activities in Fort Stockton, Big Bend National Park is just 126 miles to our south. The Davis Mountains, McDonald Observatory and Fort Davis National Historic Landmark are just under 90 miles to the southwest. The nearest full service commercial airport is Midland/Odessa, 90 miles to the north. The South Orient Rail provides freight service and is beginning limited passenger service that connects Mexico with Copper Canyon.
