Named for George Campbell Childress, author of Texas Declaration of Independence, Childress is the county seat for Childress County established in 1876. Located 116 miles southeast of Amarillo, 139 miles northeast of Lubbock, and 108 miles northwest of Wichita Falls on Highways 83 & 287.Childress is home to rolling prairies, Lakes Childress and Baylor Creek Lake.
