Kelly Square
Kelly Square is located at 115 South Travis Street * (33.636272, -96.609245 )
in or near the city of
Sherman
Located on Sherman's historic downtown square, Kelly Square actually consists of four buildings. Although each building is accessible to the other from within, each has its own history. The buildings are believed to have been built in the 1870's, after the big fire, each for its own purpose. Business names such as Woolworth's 5 & 10, Linxwilers Clothing Store of Men and Boys, Lyric Theater, LeMoyne and Halley Druggists, Taymenm Berry & Company; Lankford & Batsell; Glasscock's; Mitchell-Mason Drug Company; Higginbothams; and finally, in 1925 Dyer & Jones. All four buildings were bought between 1916 and 1918 by a trunk salesman, Leo Kelly. Mr. Kelly had a common brick facade placed on the front of all four buildings. In addition, he had his name engraved in concrete and put at the top of the new brick facade. This is the source of Kelly in Kelly Square. In 1921 Kelly sold the north center building to the J.C. Penny department store organization.
This outstandingly renovated shopping experience is graced by a pianist most days for the listening enjoyment of the lunch diners in both restaurants. Home accessories, boutiques for clothes, interiors, landscape and jewelry - Kelly Square has a wonderful sense of yesteryear along with a flavorful taste of today.
