Stephenville
John and William Stephen founded Stephenville and donated the land for the courthouse with the stipulation that the town be called Stephenville; later, state legislation passed to guarantee the name. The first courthouse of Erath County in Stephenville was built circa 1857 from clapboard. When it burned in 1866, the county records were destroyed as well. The second courthouse was built in 1867 from stone. The third courthouse was built from 1892 to 1893 from Austin stone at a cost of $75,000. Open Monday - Friday 8am - noon, 1pm - 5pm.
