Amarillo, Texas

Located in the Panhandle Plains region, the town of Amarillo, Texas is in Potter county.

 

Amarillo, Located in the Texas Panhandle and bordered by New Mexico and Oklahoma, Amarillo was first settled in 1887. The name, Amarillo, was taken from the Spanish language meaning yellow, because of the color of the sub-soil in the channel of the Amarillo Creek. In the early days, most of the houses were painted yellow to commemorate the name. Visit Amarillo and you're visiting the old west. From families to senior travelers, Amarillo has an activity for the outdoor enthusiast, the arts connoisseur and the western history buff. Attractions include Palo Duro Canyon State Park, with over 18,000 acres in one of the nation's largest canyons; TEXAS Legacies, one of the nation's best outdoor productions; the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, the largest history museum in Texas; the American Quarter Horse Museum, home to the history of America's most popular equine breed; the Don Harrington Discovery Center, now with a brand new Digital Space Theater; Cadillac Ranch, America's most unique bumper crop; Big Texan Steak Ranch & Opry, home of the free 72 ounce steak dinner; Historic Rt. 66, America's Mother Road and professional ballet, opera, symphony and theater companies.
